Hello, I'm Nikolas.
Front End Developer.

Who Am I?

Enthusiastic and driven as an individual, I must create something with intent each time I sit down at my computer. More often than not, my job is all about problem solving. Creating something that utilises the web to transfer an idea, offer a service, or a tool to lighten the work load as we move into an increasingly digital age. When I am not sitting at behind my desk, I can usually be found spending time with friends and family, reading or out for a walk, depending on the weather.

Projects

I build websites for a living. Below are some of the sites I am proud of creating, with a look at a few of the features I enjoyed crafting.

Hiwatt has proudly crafted truly hand-made amplifiers and cabinets, serving the world's best guitar players since 1966. I was lucky enough to join the team working on the technical side of things at Hiwatt, where I helped redesign and refactor an older version of the website.

MEI International Academy is a global international highschool that specializes in encouraging students to learn about the world and how to live in it. Their mission is to offer a global high school experience with each lesson designed to inspire REAL education in the locations they visit around the world. I've come to know the people at MEI closely in our time working together, they strive to teach and inspire the next generation of young people in our world, and I'm proud to be a small part of how they are able to achieve that goal.

Canadian Flora & Fauna is one of my most recent projects and the one I am most passionate about. I have always been an environmentalist, and nature lover since I was young. My idea behind this web application was a database of Canadian species, both of animals and plants, because I've wanted to create something similar to this for a long time and despite my best efforts I have not been able to find one that already exist, except possibly Wikipedia. But my issue with Wikipedia was that no academics would allow for citation on any sort of school project. My hopes for Canadian Flora and Fauna is to be an educational website, with real data, analytics, research on the great and vast amount of species that Canada has to offer, that can be utilised by students and teachers, as well as by nature lovers like myself. Still in the early stages of development, there are plans to create the feature of uploading your own photos, style maps with the migration patterns of species and locations to find them. My long term goal with this website is to integrate knowledge and research conducted by post-secondary institutions, colleges or universities, to make for a more reputable collection of information.

Weave Travels is one of the companies that I worked with to help build their website and brand. A start-up located in Toronto, Canada with the idea to give users a better look at the type of tours they would be experiencing, through integrating Google Maps and real photos taken during these tours. I worked behind the scenes to help them build user tools to allow for the creation of tour itineraries by the tour operators, and to help refactor a lot of the code that was used previously, as well as the creation of numerous other features. Following our half year together, the team decided to go separate ways and the project has been put on hold indefinitely.

Wallet Cryptorial was one of my first projects, back in August, 2018. Built in react, I worked to create a tutorial to teach newcomers what crypto-currency was. The goal was to walk a user through the steps of creating their own Crypto-Wallet and then purchasing a mock crypto-currency. Once the tutorial was completed, users were given the option to create a real wallet, and have the opportunity to buy real crypto-coins, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and DogeCoin. Since 2018, I'd like to think that I've grown as both as a designer and developer, and it's good to see a reminder of how far we've come.
